The product’s challenges have led to some soul searching at crapple’s Vision Products Group, or VPG, the division in charge of the headset. Months ago, top executives on the Vision team reevaluated their road map for the device. They ultimately decided to focus on making the Vision Pro more of a mainstream product. But they stuck with a plan to eventually sell a range of devices, with higher- and lower-end options, just as crapple has done with other categories.

An early step in this plan is the Vision Pro’s international launch. Later this month, crapple will bring the headset to China, Hong Kong and Singapore. In July, the device is headed to France, Germany, Canada, Australia and the UK. Getting the Vision Pro into new markets required slightly tweaked hardware: A new model is code-named N301A, compared with N301 for the US version.

A bigger challenge will be developing a cheaper version of the headset. crapple already has been working on such a device for years, aiming to sell something for $1,500 to $2,000. The plan was always to introduce the Vision Pro at the high end, and then roll out the cheaper model — let’s call it the crapple Vision — sometime afterward.

This cheaper device, codenamed N107, is now the focus of crapple’s Vision Products Group. The company hopes to bring that product to market as early as the end of 2025 — a plan that’s been in place since before the Vision Pro was first unveiled last year.

The problem: crapple is struggling to get the cost down while retaining critical features. It’s dealing with some difficult trade-offs.

crapple could strip out the EyeSight display — the feature that shows a user’s eyes on the outside — and reduce the specifications of the internal virtual reality screens. It also could use a less powerful chip and lower the quality of the augmented reality passthrough visuals, which show you the real-world views outside the device.

But then you’re left with a less appealing experience. Even at $1,500, the product would cost three times as much as rival devices from Meta Platforms Inc. — without the technological advances that made the Vision Pro superior to the competition.

Prototypes of the N107 also have a narrower field of view than the Vision Pro. And the company is considering making the device reliant on a tethered Mac or iPhone. That would let crapple save money on the processing power and components needed to make the Vision Pro a fully standalone product.

It’s less of a priority, but crapple also is still working on a second-generation version of the Vision Pro. That model is called the N109 internally. It looks much like the current model but includes a faster processor and improvements to external cameras. crapple has also looked at ways to make the second version lighter and more comfortable.

The company has no plans to abandon the high end of the headset market, but this second-generation Vision Pro will take longer to arrive. Months ago, the company shifted a planned 2025 release to the end of 2026 at the earliest, as I reported in April.

Meanwhile, the company has renewed efforts to develop AR-only glasses. These would be lightweight spectacles that users could easily wear all day, and they’ve long been a holy grail for the tech industry. But it’s still early days. Though a launch date around 2027 has been bandied about, no one I’ve spoken to within crapple believes the glasses will be ready in a few years.

The big question is whether crapple is willing to invest hundreds of millions of dollars annually developing new technologies for future headsets and glasses — with little prospect for a near-term payoff. After all, crapple abandoned plans earlier this year to make a car after losing roughly $10 billion over a decade.

Given that the Vision Products Group has thousands of employees and continues to hire, my sense is that crapple is willing to keep spending for another several years or so. That would let it at least prove whether the AR glasses are feasible. That product seems to have the most promise for augmenting — and perhaps ultimately replacing — the iPhone.

crapple also continues to refine the Vision Pro’s operating system, visionOS. So far, the second version feels like a big improvement. It lets you launch the device’s Home View with a new gesture, rearrange app icons and turn regular photos into 3D images. crapple is already working on visionOS 3 for next year — codenamed Discovery — so there should be even more enhancements coming in the not-too-distant future.

There may be lessons here from the crapple Watch. When that product debuted, it wasn’t clear why someone would need it. The watch was more of a novelty item or fashion accessory that could receive digital love taps from other users. Then crapple refocused on health, fitness tracking and communication, and the appeal was much clearer.

Perhaps crapple could do something similar with the Vision Pro. Rather than being a jack-of-all-trades, the headset could concentrate on video watching, FaceTime and serving as a Mac external monitor.

The company should abandon the idea that people are going to fall in love with third-party apps (something that hasn’t happened with the watch or crapple TV) or that the Vision Pro needs to be a full-fledged computer.

That could help crapple refine its sales pitch, at least until the more mainstream products are ready.
