In effetti mi pare strano, cmq quel tappetino è ottimo e non sono la sola a pensarlo. A parte la fattura degna di nota per un prodotto molto economico è anche parecchio bello.

Alluminio, fatto pure bene. Non è economico: è regalato. Costa meno del mio precedente steelseries in tessuto che dopo 6 mesi è caduto a pezzi.

We all have them, collecting dust, hiding in the corners of our offices in unopened drawers for years at a time. That’s the nature of the beast–old mousepads were cheap and forgettable and most of the time they came free with the PC you bought. So how do they rank after years of use?

The oldest mousepad we could find is nine years old, from an old Max Payne game title. This measly 8” x 7” mousepad is worn down, but it still firmly grips most surfaces and tracks well enough. The cloth is still in decent condition even after at least three consecutive years of use and the original design is in perfect condition still. All of the mice we tested on it worked well. The glide is smooth, tracking is stable, and there are no bumps.

Interestingly, the only downside to this particular mousepad is the small size and that the edges are literally falling apart. With more use, we’re sure it’ll fall apart at the seams. Then again, your older mousepads may fare better than our own, but the point is even an old mousepad can function just as well as some of today’s newer models.

 

A magazine, a large book, a DVD case…we’ve heard all sorts of weird makeshift mousepads. The most popular is your standard magazine and why not? Most have great covers, they’re large enough to use as a mousepad, and if it tracks right, it’s free (since you already have the magazine). So what could possibly be the downside?

Magazines aren’t made to be mousepads and keeping your wrist on the paper cover for long enough will make it stick to you. We chose a higher-quality magazine, with a glossy cover, which proved quite comfortable. It’s even thicker than the thickest mousepad we tested, but because of the glossy surface, it wasn’t uncomfortable. Laugh all you like, but if you’re in dire straits, just whip out an issue of your favorite magazine and put it under your mouse. Don’t expect to game any better on it–tracking is fine until you accidentally rip or fold a page and make it bumpy. Plus, if you need some quick reading material, it’s always there!

 

We hate to say that the answer is “it depends,” but when it comes to mousepads, it’s really all about your personal preferences and the layout of your office and computer. Hardcore PC gamers will definitely want one, as will professional photo editors, graphic designers, and anyone else who uses their mouse for work.

Ultimately, the previously required mousepad has turned into a niche, though they still sell so well because they’re affordable and because so many people still think we need them. As we’ve shown with the last three pages, you really don’t. What’s important to gamers and graphic designers is a uniform surface, something easily achievable nowadays with a simple magazine or a good table.

SteelSeries’ Kim Rom put it best: “Honestly, my mother doesn’t need a mousepad. She spends very little time in front of her computer and the back button in her browser is pretty big," Rom said. "Do [most users] need the high level of precision that a competitive gamer who makes a living playing games needs? No, probably not. Do comfort and precision that ease mouse use and decrease wrist strain matter for everyone else? Sure it does.”

These are all things that mousepads, and any mouse accessories, aim to provide, though ultimately the industry is moving in a direction to make mice track on any surface, as we’ve seen with Microsoft’s BlueTrack and Logitech’s Darkfield technologies. In the end, you probably don’t need a mousepad.
